Beverly, MA was not too hard to find and the Amtrak ride to Boston was amazing! I love riding the train for many reasons:
1. I don't have to think/concentrate for the whole ride
2. When I get tired, I can sleep
3. You get to see something more exciting than large expressways and box stores
4. I don't have to pass transport trucks at high speeds
5. You keep journeying even when you go to the bathroom
Sooooo many reasons why the train is amazing, including that Sheldon (from Big Bang Theory) also loves them!! Trains hold some romance in my mind that adds to the fun. It was a long ride at 9 hours but as the overpasses became 12 lanes wide or wider, I was so glad I took the train!
Once I arrived in Beverly, MA, I spent three days at Project Adventure. I was enrolled in their Advanced Facilitation Workshop and it was amazing! The workshop facilitator decided to keep the pace of the workshop slower than some because we were receiving feedback after every session. We ended up co-leading three sessions on community building, problem-solving and initiative games. I love spending time working with groups but it took me until Sunday to be able to facilitate comfortably with my peers. I can facilitate easily with almost any age group but when it comes to peers or people I feel know more than I or who will be critiquing what I do, I get nervous enough that it's not the same. It was like that in school when teaching a skill during many of my courses. I am a far better facilitator/teacher when I feel comfortable trusting my instincts, which have served me well. I question that when I feel scrutinized.
Even though I was not at my best for most of it, it was great to get feedback and to gather new ideas. There are so many books of games but I find it hard to use games until I see them used. When I read them, sometimes they don't seem like they would work or they seem uninteresting but then I see one done.......and it becomes the new favourite!
Here are some pictures from one of our tasks........it was a navigation challenge! We had to drive to Halibut Point State Park and find our facilitators! It was fun and my first ever look at the Atlantic Ocean. The granite quarry near Rockport is one of the closest bodies of fresh water to the ocean. It was beautiful even though it was overcast! We ate supper in Gloucester (pronounced Glasta by locals for all the Canadians back home) which was the site of the movie, The Perfect Storm. It's a cute little tourist town and would be a zoo to drive through in the summer.....winding narrow streets and people walking everywhere!
